Zioness statement on Bernie Sanders and Amer Zahr:
We feel increasingly abandoned by Bernie Sanders and his campaign, as the antisemitism of another surrogate of his, Amer Zahr, is being covered up without remorse or acknowledgement. A Jewish Bernie supporter and volunteer called out Zahr for deleting a tweet that equates Israel, the homeland of the Jewish people, with ISIS, a murderous terrorist organization. The campaign said nothing. This is not the first time that Zioness has called out the Sanders campaign for its antisemitic surrogates.
American Jews are hurting. We expect better of a candidate who is seeking the highest elected office in our nation. We need leaders who will welcome us in the America they seek to build. We cannot stand by when a candidate elevates an individual as an official representative of their views, when that individual not only has a track record of attacking Zionists, but also hides their antisemitism when called out.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to fight for real leaders who will not demand that we, American Jews, abandon our identities as Zionists in order to be safe and welcome in domestic movements for social, racial, economic, and gender justice.
We will not submit to a destructive false choice applied specifically to our community: We will continue to be both unabashedly progressive and unapologetically Zionist.
