Mayor Mamdani’s pathological obsession with Israel is chilling.
A city government manufacturing a confrontation with a foreign head of state is a choice — about where to spend resources and attention, where to place moral urgency, and which New Yorkers he aims to serve.
He made that choice on a day when the City Council Speaker accused his administration of failing to respond to a deadly outbreak with “urgency and transparency”; when a tornado watch was in effect for all 8.5 million New Yorkers across five boroughs; and when severe flooding paralyzed large parts of the city.
On that day, the Mayor of the world’s most consequential city chose to prioritize the demonization of Israel.
It is an astonishing and corrupt abuse of city government for Mayor Mamdani to pursue his personal and hateful agenda, asking lawyers paid by New York City taxpayers to “analyze” something that was never in question. A sitting head of state visiting for UN business has sovereign immunity, the NYPD has no jurisdiction to arrest, and the United States, which is not a party to the Rome Statute, cannot enforce an ICC warrant.
Yet Mayor Mamdani announced that his “administration has reviewed every avenue available” to come to this foregone conclusion.
In the same video, Mamdani declared that “anyone with their eyes, with their heart, with their conscience” should recognize the unique depravity of the Jewish state, accusing it of “crimes so grave that they offend all of humanity.” That is not an argument, but a declaration that disagreement is a moral failing — that any conclusion other than unique and collective Jewish evil is proof of one’s defective character. The implication is clear that Jewish New Yorkers and all others who reject his conclusion are inhumane, lacking in heart and conscience.
Few ideas in history have proven as dangerous and as malignant as these.
The arrest was never the point. Everyone, including Mamdani, knew it would never happen.
The point was to normalize the idea of a uniquely evil Jewish collective, in pursuit of the dismantlement of the Jewish state.
The point was to build Mamdani’s political brand through the demonization of Israel, and the dehumanization of New Yorkers who feel connected to it.
This is a mayor auditioning for a global spotlight, using the evergreen power of antisemitism as an organizing strategy, and the machinery of his office as a prop.
Antisemitism works in a predictable way: one community is scapegoated as the explanation for society’s failures – and for the failures of the leaders who promised to fix them. When leaders activate antisemitism, it is to deflect responsibility.
Every New Yorker, Jewish and otherwise, deserves a mayor relentlessly focused on food security, housing, healthcare, transportation, childcare, education, and the authoritarian agenda being pursued in our nation’s capital. Instead, while NYC grapples with the most extreme wealth gap of any major city in America, Mayor Mamdani spends time, attention, and city resources on a performative propaganda video manufacturing a confrontation that will achieve nothing for his constituents.
This September, New York will once again host a UN General Assembly week bringing a parade of officials credibly accused — by human rights organizations, UN experts, journalists, and members of Congress — of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and mass atrocities. They will pass through NYC with no comparable campaign against them, no press conferences, no declarations of intent or desire to arrest.
True moral clarity comes from digesting and confronting the singular obsession with Israel as the root of all evil and suffering – an idea that spreads to destroy movements, governments, nations and entire continents.
Naming this danger is not a defense of Israel’s loathsome Prime Minister. It is a defense of human decency, liberal democracy and truth.
