As the week comes to a close and we think about lighting candles for Shabbat and the 6th night of Hanukkah, we must engage in solemn reflection along with our celebration. Hanukkah is a time where we light up the night with joy—and tonight we should find double the light, and double the joy—but we are living in an exceptionally dark time and our community is experiencing deep pain and visceral fear. This isn’t where we thought we’d be on the last Shabbat of the decade.
