Antisemitism in the Academy: A Deep Dive on Free Speech, Academic Freedom and Campus Climate

As anti-Israel protests evoked painful memories from university campuses nationwide, the new academic year brought renewed concerns for Jewish students, parents, faculty, and administrators. With the heightened tension, the pressing question remained: How could we prevent another spiral into chaos that jeopardized the safety of Jewish students and undermined the integrity of our esteemed institutions of higher education?

Zioness hosted a live panel from the DNC in Chicago on Thursday, August 22nd at 10am CT titled “Antisemitism in the Academy: A Deep Dive on Free Speech, Academic Freedom, and Campus Climate.” This crucial panel explored the Biden Administration’s response to these challenges, featuring insights from the highest-ranking official at the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and leading experts across legal, academic, and political spheres. To begin the event, Congressman Dan Goldman gave introductory remarks about the work he is leading in Congress to address the epidemic of antisemitism on campus and the discussion then explored the complexities of addressing antisemitism on campus, balancing free speech with Title VI and 14th Amendment protections, and understanding the academy’s historical role as a hub for political dissent.
